This little girl is the only one of my ancestors, back to 1800, not born in south Ulster.

It brings to mind another little girl, her great-grandmother, who was born in India about 1794 and married 11 years later.

McWilliam

The following material is separated into two distinct sections.
The first section concentrates on the McWilliams family in south Ulster and the Clogher Valley mainly concentrating on the parishes of Carnteel, Aghaloo & Clogher. It is designed to lay the groundwork for tracing specific genealogies backwards from established connections.
The second section surveys all McWilliams in Ulster from the 17th century. The aim is demographic and is an attempt to establish distinct lineages which might subsequently be defined by Y-DNA haplotypes.

Section 1: Genealogy of McWilliams of Carnteel, the Clogher Valley & south Ulster

Pre-1800 / Tithe Applotment / Griffith's Valuation / 1901/11 census

Pre-1800 records

Part of the Clogher valley was granted to Sir Thomas Ridgeway in 1610. He built Augher Castle. Possibly coincidentally his wife was Cecilia McWilliam.

In the Carew Manuscripts, 1603-1624, published by the British Government, may be found a series of reports made by commissioners who were appointed by the king at different periods to visit the various landlords in Ulster to whom allotments had been made, and take account of their progress. The first party to make such an inspection consisted of five commissioners, among whom was the Lord Deputy for Ireland, Sir Arthur Chichester, who had himself been allotted the district now occupied by the city of Belfast. This visit was made in the summer of 1611, and the commissioners' report is as follows :

TYRONE; PRECINCT OF CLOGHER
1. 2000 acres, Sir Thomas Ridgeway: stone castle and bawn; a town built containing 15 houses; 2 freeholders, 18 lessees; able to produce 56 men with arms.
2. 2000 acres, John Leigh: a house and bawn of stone built; small village containing 8 houses; 8 freeholders, 12 lessees, 21 cottagers; able to produce 48 men with arms.

Sir Thomas Ridgway, vice-treasurer and treasurer of Wars in Ireland, undertaker for 2000 acres, has appeared in person. His agent is Emanuel Ley, resident this twelve month, who is to be made a freeholder under him. Sir Thomas brought from London and Devonshire, the 4th May, 1610, twelve carpenters, mostly with wives and families, who have since been resident, employed in felling timber, brought by Patrick McKenna of the Trugh (Trough), county Monaghan, none being in any part of the Barony of Clogher, or elsewhere nearer him, viz, 700 trees,400 boards and planks, besides a quantity of stone, timber for tenements, with timber ready for the setting up of a water-mill. He is erecting a wardable castle and houses, to be finished about the next spring. Ten masons work upon the castle, and two smiths. One, Mr. Farefax, Mr. Laughton, Robert Williams, Henry Holland, and three of said carpenters are to be made freeholders. Other families are resident wherewith he will perform all things answerable to his covenants.

Tyrone, Barony de Dungannon, Henry Stewart esquire, undertaker of 1,500 acres; the names of his men & arms.

Snaphance only, James Williams

(Firearms - in particular, 'the most advanced weapon, the snaphance' - were expensive, and so those who held them were probably wealthier than those who had 'simple weapons such as a sword, pike, [or] halberd.)

RJ Hunter who edited this list says: "Possibly the son of Robert Williams, one of the workmen Sir Thomas Ridgeway promised would become freeholders". It is not clear to me how he makes this deduction.

There are no other Williams or McWilliams listed in Tyrone in the Muster Roll although there are a scattering in Armagh particularly associated with Francis Sacheverell.

John McWilliams was a house holder in Logan or Loughans townland, Aghalow parish. Loughans is now in Carnteel parish and only a couple of miles from Carnteel townland.

Siege of Derry

Possibly present at the siege of Derry. John Williams, Tyrone and William Williams are given in the published list of defenders; Rev JM McWilliam states that several men of Carnteel parish took part in the siege.

The following listings are confined to McWilliam(s). Depending on the locality the name might well be interchangeable with McQuillan, Williams or Williamson. These latter names have not yet been listed.

Muster Rolls 1630

Men & Arms: The Ulster Settlers, c. 1630, Edited by RJ Hunter
{Note from William J Roulston, "Researching Scots-Irish Ancestors".}
A muster roll was a list of able-bodied men who were capable of military service. They were aremed at their own expense. Several mster rolls survive for Ulster counties from the early seventeenth century. They are usually arranged by estate and consist in the main of a list of names with perhaps the weapon, if any, possessed.

{It can be presumed that these individuals (British) were Protestant.}

Hearth money rolls, 1663-9

{Note from William J Roulston, "Researching Scots-Irish Ancestors".}
In the 1660s the government introduced a tax on hearths as a means of raising revenue. The returns, arranged by parish and usually with townland locations, list the names of all householders paying this tax; they survive for half the counties in Ireland with coverage most complete in Ulster. The hearth money rolls cannot be taken as a complete record of every household in the areas covered. There seems to have been considerable evasion, while many houses of a less permenant nature occupied by Irish families no hearth tax was paid.
Their is no Hearth Money Roll for Co Down; data from Londonderry, Antrim, Tyrone and Donegal is extracted from excel spread sheets compiled by William Macafee.

The 'census of Protestant householders', 1740

{Note from William J Roulston, "Researching Scots-Irish Ancestors".}
What has generally been termed a 'census of Protestant houeholders' was compiled in 1740. The returns were made by he collectors of the hearth money and it is likely that the names were taken from this list. Furthermore, for the barony of Loughinsholin in County Londonderry, it seems that both Protestants and Catholics were included.

Clugston, John - Lisnafiffy 1769.
Clugston, Aaron - Lisnafiffy - 1789.
Clugston, John - Lisnafiffy - 1819. (Landlord - Rev Thomas Waring)
Clugston, Aron - Lisnafiffy - 1819.
*** [Both the above have lives stated: John, Aron & Archd Clugston.}

1832 - Persons licensed to carry arms - John Clugston, Lisnafiffy, one gun.

Lisnafiffy is partly in the parish of Seapatrick (431 acres), partly in Tullylish (209 acres). The division was first noted on Petty's barony map of c.1657, explained in 1661 as two sessiaghs in Seapatrick, one in Tullylish.

The Warings held the portion in Tullylish and one of the two moieties in Seapatrick. This can be easily worked out from an inspection of the map accompanying Griffith’s Valuation. They owned the southern part.

From the Crossle papers: extract from 1821 census

Griffith’s Valuation of Tullylish and Seapatrick

The townland of Lisnafiffy consists of three moieties, one in Tullylish and two in Seapatrick. A search of the Valuation records for Clugston in Tullylish reveals Robert Clugston in Drumhorc and John Clugston in Lisnafiffy. In Lisnafiffy in Seapatrick we find Henry Clugston.

Griffith
Lisnafiffy (Tullylish)

1 John Clugston, Lessor Henry Waring, Hse, off, land 17.1.0
2 John Clugston, Lessor Henry Waring, Hse, off, land 10.1.0
16 John Bodle, Lessor Henry Waring, Land, 7.1.0

Lisnafiffy (Seapatrick)

20 John Bodel, Lessor Henry Waring, Hse, off, land 13.1.25
22 Henry Clugston, Lessor Henry Waring, Hse off, land 34.1.3

The Valuation Cancellation Books show that the land held byJohn Clugston was transfered to Robert Clugston after John's death in 1878 and the land held by Henry Clugston was transfered to John Bodel in 1876; the will of Henry Clugston suggests that Bodel was his brother-in-law. At the same time the land held by John Bodel was transfered to Francis Bodel who had occupied 19 and from 1876 on occupied 19 & 20.

Drumhorc (Tullylish)

6 Robert Clugston, Lessor Henry Waring, Hse, off, land 8.1.5

Although John and Henry Clugston lease land in different parishes the two ‘farms’ are in fact contiguous suggesting that they may be related.
Drumhorc is beside Lisnafiffy and the property leased by Robert is located close to those of John and Henry. In all three cases the landlord is Henry Waring.
It seems likely that John Clugston is the father of my great grandfather, Samuel and that all three Clugstons are related.

There were also Clugstons in Kilpike which was also contiguous to the east of Lisnafiffy.

William Clugston had block 21 of 12a; block 7 of 5a; block 10 of 15a including a brick kiln and letting several houses, including one to Eliza Clugston – obviously I can’t be sure it’s all the same man!
There’s also a John Clugston in Edenderry with just a house.

The relationships between all of these Clugstons must be a matter of speculation.

In Lenaderg the property of William Kennedy has two parcels of land owned by Robert Kennedy on either side. The Tullylish baptismal records show the birth of William to Robert Kennedy in 1830 suggesting that these two were father and son and therefore that this William was too young to be the father of Lizzie & Maggie.
