This little girl is the only one of my ancestors, back to 1800, not born in south Ulster.

It brings to mind another little girl, her great-grandmother, who was born in India about 1794 and married 11 years later.

The McWilliam burial ground must have been taken in 1740 when Aughnacloy Parish Church, Co Tyrone, was first opened. It is a large plot near the church door, under the end wall of the churchyard, beside that of the Moore family. There is only one stone, a very heavy ‘recumbent’ stone, at the end of the plot.
The inscription reads:
Erected to the memory of John McWilliams of Carnteel who died the 28th day of May 1826 aged 60 years. Also his wife Eleanor McWilliams who died 21st February 1843 aged 73 years. And their two daughters Mary and Margaret. Also Isabella wife of the Revd James McWilliams Maguiresbridge who died 15th April 1859 aged 67 years.

FIRST NEWRY (SANDYS STREET) Presbyterian Congregation

Mr. Moran's installation past, the proposal for the erection of a schoolhouse or lecture hall behind the church was almost immediately revived. Plans were asked for a building fifty feet by twenty-five, two storeys high, together with a vestibule ; ami after some time Mr. M'George, Mr. Kirkpatrick, and Mr. M'Culla, were instructed to make arrangements with Mr. A. Henry to commence the building without loss of time. Why nothing came of this instruction is not recorded. Possibly the raising of £120 to meet a debt occasioned delay. Possibly, too, the desire to increase the comfort of the minister altered the direction of the Congregation's thought. For when attention was next turned to the making of an addition to the congregational properly, it was concluded that a Manse should get the prior place. And at the annual meeting of the Congregation in 1852 the erection of a Manse was ^proposed and unanimously agreed to. The names associated with the carrying out of the proposal were:—
Messrs. Wm. M'Culla, James Henderson, Robert M'Blain, William Sinclair, Henry Murdoch, Samuel Parsons, Moses Henry, George Henderson, Henry Hawkins, Thomas Laing, James M'George, Robert Glenny, John Best, and Wm. Kirkpatrick.
Instead of erecting a new house as at first proposed, the house No. 11 Downshire Place was bought from Mr. Robert Greer at £100, and by deed dated 9th May, 1855, the property was conveyed to Messrs. Samuel Parsons,
Robert M'Blain, dames M'George, and Wm. M'Culla, as trustees for the Congregation.

It was decided by a majority of the Congregation to present a call to Mr. William Todd Martin, a licentiate of the Belfast Presbytery. To this decision the minority were so strongly opposed that they seceded, and determined to organize a new Congregation. This minority included all the members of Session, and all the surviving trustees of the Manse property, the Congregational Secretary, and several members of Committee. The inclusion of so many office-bearers among the seceding section, and the fact that they took with them the books of the Congregation, did much to complicate matters; and both majority and minority were for several years a source of care and trouble to a Commission of the General Assembly. But the points over which friction arose, and the successive stages of the struggle, have long since been allowed to drop into oblivion, and no good could be accomplished by reviving unpleasant memories. It is enough to note that the minority worshipped at first in the Savings Bank, and later on in the Primitive Methodist Church, Kilmorey Street, the same building in which the parent Congregation had passed through its transitional stage; that they were erected the third Congregation in Newry by ordinance of the General Assembly in 1863 ; that they called Mr. A. C. Murphy (afterwards Dr. A. C. Murphy), son of the well-known Professor of Hebrew in Assembly's College, Belfast, who was ordained their minister; that while under his ministry they built the ornate and comfortable church known as Riverside;

Underneath are deposited the remains of Joseph Donaldson, the infant son of Alexander Donaldson of Tullyvallen 12 July 1813. Also the remains of James Donaldson who departed 21st Nov 1833 and also the remains of the late Alexander Donaldson of Tullyvallen who died on 25th June 1834 in 70th year and of Elizabeth Donaldson his wife who died on 11th May 18.. aged .. years. Also John Donaldson of Tullyvallen who died 31st Oct 1854 aged 36 years and Elizabeth wife of Alexander Donaldson Altnamackin who died June 1885 aged 51 years.

Underneath this stone are laid the remains of William Donaldson of Freeduff who departed this life the 20th of November 1815 aged 47 years. Also those of Barbara his affectionate and faithful widow who died March 31st 1865 aged 82 years. Thou also sleep in Jesus will god bring with him.

DICKIE Sacred to the memory of Joseph Dickie, son of Mr Robert Dickie of Clonaleenan who in the bloom of his life fell a victim to the fever of the Country, in the province of Surinam, in South America, and is there interred. He departed this life 2nd October, 1807, aged 33 years.

DICKIE Erected by his loving wife in the memory of her husband Joseph Dickie Solicitor late of Fairhill Dundalk who departed this life, on the 1st day of October 1877, his 56th Birthday. Kate the beloved wife of Joseph Dickie here commemorated departed this life at Fairhill on the 30th day of January 1916 in her 88th year. In the midst of life we are in death, watch therefore for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherin the son of man cometh. MATH XXV. 13.

DICKIE Beneath this stone lie the remains of Robert Dickie of Roachdale who died on the 18th day of February 1810 aged 58 years. Also Jane Dickie daughter of the above named Robert Dickie who died on the 2nd day of November 1850 aged 5 years, 6 months . William died 27th of September . . . Jane died .th of December 18.6 aged 21 years. Mary Ann Dickie widow of the above named Robert Dickie who died on . . . aged . . . . Mary Ann Dickie who died . . . 1884 aged 61 years. Margaret daughter of the above Robert Dickie died on October 28th 1926 in her 91st year.

DICKIE In memory of Robert Dickie, M.D. Assistant Surgeon Honourable East India Company Service eldest son of the late Robert Dickie of Roachdale, died on the 5th of August 1844 aged 26 years whilst doing duty with the 21st Fusiliers, at Kamptee, East Indies, and is buried there his Brother Officers having erected a Monument to his memory.

McCULLA In memory of Anna Maria McCulla wife of Alexander Dickie, Roachdale, who died August 25th 1896, aged 65 years, Also of their youngest son Joseph Dickie who died February 29th 1908 aged 32 years. And of William Dickie, Roachdale, their second son who died January 27th 1919, aged 51 years. Meta youngest daughter of the above Alexander Dickie, who died January 23rd 1936. And Mary Wallace fourth daughter of the above who died December 9th 1938.

Louth, who died 22nd Jan. 1776 aged 85 years and of his wife Alice Donaldson, who died 24th Aug 1769 aged 82 years and of Richard Donaldson, MD, whose father Joseph Donaldson was a grandson of the said Alex Donaldson; he died 4th Mar 1879 aged 54 years.

D6 Here lie the remains of John Wallace, Attorney at Law, who died 30th Jan 1827, aged 67 years and of Jane, his wife who died 13th April 1823 aged 55 years; leaving behind them an unsullied character, an example of honour, integrity, humanity and resignation to the will of Providence, taking to this grave the sighs, the tears and the prayers of the poor.

At a meeting of the Clones Parish Vestry it was unanimously agreed that Joseph Wright and Mr William Harris be overseers of roads of Bellitratnan and that they collect from ye proprietors and inhabitants of ye landowners of said Bellitratnan 1/2d /acre in lieu of their 6 days labour and apply 3 parts to ye near roads of that part of the parish and ye ¼ part to that road from Mullandavagh to Smithborough.

For all overseers:
It is also agreed that said overseers above mentioned at ye several (places) in said Parish shall give publick notice to ye several proprietors and inhabitants of said parish to meet ye said overseers on a certain day and place then to be appointed and to receive 1/2d/acre throughout ye whole parish for all arable and pasture lands and proportionately for mountain lands not exempting ye lands belonging to the several overseers and to apply ye same to the several roads under their districts in lieu of ye six days labour and account for ye same under their hand upon next Michaelmas Vestry and that ye overseers oblige them that refuse to pay to work the six days labour according to ye statute.
It is also agreed that ye town of Clones is to work as usually

St Anne’s Ballyshannon

The church register of Inismacsamph in which parish part of Ballyshannon lies has some early Dickson records. It begins on "the first of Jullye 1660". Amongst these are:
Susanna Dicksone the daughter of Alexander Dicksone by his wyfe Nicklas was bapt. the 2nd of Jullye 1660 her godfather was Richard Dumbare her godmothers was Susanna Watson and Hellen Lyttle.

Margrat Dicksone the daughter of Robert Dicksone by his wife Elezabeth was bapt. the 13 of October 1660 her godfather was John Ramsaye her godmothers was Jannat Ramsaye and Gressall Johnstone.

James Dicksone and Jannat Johnstowne was married the 26 of May 1664.

Henerie Dicksone the son of Alexander Dicksone be his wyfe Nicklas was bapt. the 20 of December 1664 his godfathers was Henerie Haslatt and John Humes his godmother was Marie Manerce.

6th Oct 1846 Rev Th McW Moderator.
1849; Rev DG Brown preached in Creggan & met with Session, Committee & Congregation; £20 stipend paid; Manse seriously encumbered.

A document was then presented signed 'Thomas McWilliams' and 'Anna McWilliams' against Rev JH Morell and his wife Mrs Morell for withholding a sum of money justly and legally belonging to the complainants. After mature deliberation Mr McW was requested to withdraw the complaint and the Moderator was directed to summon JHM to attend on Tuesday next in order to have the matter explained and amicably adjusted.
JHM refused to meet privately.
Discussed in Presbytery - Th McW claimed 1/5 of the property of late Mrs Park of Newry. JHM pointed out that it was a legal matter and having discussed it with the other parties they were not inclined to concede to Mr McW.
In view of the circumstances the Presby. stalled and the matter seems to have faded out.

[The issue seems to have been to get the Board to release funds to pay licentiates and probationers for local 'outreach' activities.]

Agreed unanimously to Petition both Houses of Parliament in behalf of Tenant Right. A draft of a petition was read and approved. The ministers of the Presbytery and an elder from each congregation were requested to sign it.

Read a Memorial from Mr James Lowry praying assistance from the Presbytery to enable himself and his wife and family to emigrate to Canada.
Agreed to take a collection from the members and others present in court and to forward it immediately to Rev Wm Reid of the Banbridge Presbytery and also to recommend the case of Mr Lowry to such members of our several congregations as have the means of assisting him in his misfortunes.
Moderator forwards 13/9 to Rev Wm Reid of Scarva for Mr Jas Lowry.
Dec 1849 - Mr George Brown who is about to emigrate to America applied for and received credentials.
Aug 1850 - Mr McWilliams gives notice of his intention to move a note of censure upon certain members of Assembly for rushing into courts of law and thereby embarrassing and disgracing the Presbyterian Church.
1851 - Overture to General Assembly against expending charitable funds in litigation. No suit in law should be commenced and protest against wasting the Magee Bequest in Chancery proceedings.

Livingstone re events in 1881 describes Macauley as the veteran Castleblayney Home Ruler and Tenant Righter. In 1886 he found things so rough in his area (boycotting etc) that he had to resign his ministry and leave. Many of his parishioners had left his congregation and especially after he supported the Home Rule bill, he found himself the subject of much personal abuse. When he arrived at his church on Sunday July 11 1886, he found the walls desecrated and 'No popery' written on them. On another occasion a mob surrounded himself and his wife.

"They cursed the Pope and used other forms of language too odious to print in a respectable newspaper like yours. Some of the men are my own congregation, others belong to different denominations of Protestants in the district. There were no Catholics among them. I was advised to prosecute them, but I did not like to set the law in motion against men and boys whom I baptised".

Monaghan

Presbytery of Monaghan, May 25th 1813.

Mr White reported that agreeably to the injunction of Presbytery, he had used every effort, to serve Mary Fox, with the notice, as enjoined by Presbytery, that not being able to find herself, he left a copy of it, in the house of her half sister, where she had been in y' habit of calling, and supposes that she must have received it. Mary Fox, not having appeared, the Moderator inquired of Mr Morell, whether he had been served with any notice of any charges to be brought against him, who answered in the negative, but expressed a wish, that as this meeting of Presbytery, had been appointed for the purpose, of investigating certain reports that had been circulated injurious to his character, that they should proceed, with this wish the Presbytery complied. Certain authenticated documents and statements of Mary Fox, were now produced and read, charging Mr Morell with seduction and other immoralities consequent thereto, as contained in the annexed papers, numbered 1,2,3,4. Mr Morell on his defence, produced a variety of written affidavits, Numbered 5-10 which are ordered to be in retention, and other circumstantial evidence, and in addition to these, George Breakey and William Shegog Esq. appeared and being solemnly adjured, gave evidence to the following effect; Viz. that they have been in particular habits of intimacy, confidence and friendship with Mr Morell for many years back, that they have been in the habit of coming to his house without waiting for the formality of an invitation at all hours of the day and night, that they particularly recollect seeing a servant girl at Mr Morell's of the name of Mary McCullen who was afterwards married to a man of the name of Fox, that they remember when she was first hired with Mr Morell, and that she then appeared to be about 14 or 15 years of age, that she lived about 2 1/2 with Mr Morell; that they have seen her attend table and come in and out of the room where they have been sitting; that they have never observed anything either in the conduct or manner of the Girl, or in the conduct or manner of Mr Morell, that would lead to the most distant suspicion, that any improper connection existed between them; and they believe that had any such connection subsisted they must have at some time or other observed something, that would have excited suspicion, especially as they have seen Mr Morell in his most unguarded moments, and have come to his house unexpectedly at all hours, sometimes after he had gone to bed at night, and sometimes before he was up in the morning; that they firmly believe that no such connection ever existed; that the present character of Mary fox is the worst they ever heard of, that she has the character of being a whore, a thief, a drunkard, and a perjured woman, and that she is not worthy of her credit on her word or oath ~ an affidavit of the Rev John Baird of Stratford on Slayney, No. 11, to the above effect was also read and ordered to be in retention - Messrs the Rev Archibald McHarg, Patrick White, and Robt Campbell also made similar statements ~ here Mr Morell concluded his defence.
The Presbytery, on Mary Fox's failing to come forward, having proceeded on documents, proved to be authentic, and having heard Mr Morell's defence, which consisted both of written affidavits and personal evidences, and have also considered, the jargon of inconsistencies and contradictions, on the part of the documents, brought forward and proved to be the production of Mary Fox, do now pass on Mr Morell a sentence of Honourable acquittal and do believe the imputation against his character, by the said Mary Fox, to be gross calumnies, dictated by malice and persevered in, from a spirit of revenge.
